Soooo what have we learned?

by Jake Sprague on Feb.23, 2010, under Industry news, PS3, X360, personal thoughts

Some interesting news from the latest US game sales charts, Bioshock 2 and Dante’s Inferno came out for both the PS3 and 360 and the numbers are in. I bet most of you are saying “Jake, who cares about game sales numbers? I own all the systems and play the games that are best for each platform.” Well you are a great person, I think more people need to be like you and in being more like you they will be more like me, which is fantastic. I know that game sales numbers are really only for fanboys to jerk off too but I think there is some interesting things happening out there in the gaming world and you should be informed. Don’t fall asleep on the job here people.

Alright, anyway, lets start with Bioshock 2, a first person shooter that had it’s predecessor come out exclusively for the 360, then about a year later saw a release on the PS3. I think it’s pretty logical how the sales for this game look, the 360 version has sold more then double the copies of the PS3 version, and why wouldn’t it? It is a game that we loved here in the US (where the 360 has almost double the consoles sold compared to the PS3), it is a first person shooter, and it had a long exclusive run on the 360. Almost all first person shooters do better on the 360, I don’t have the info in front of me but I would be willing to guess that a 360 FPS sells more then it’s PS3 version almost every time. So no big surprise there, but the Dante’s Inferno sales are a little more interesting.

So assuming that there are a little under 2x as many 360s as opposed to PS3s in the US you would think Dante’s Inferno would have a similar ratio of sales, but that is not the case. We have seen a trend recently of games that are not FPS’s selling very comparable on both consoles, not only that but in the case of games that have some sort of exclusive content (Batman Arkum Asylum anyone?) they are selling better on the PS3. Dante’s Inferno has some sort of exclusive content on the PS3, I don’t know what it is because I don’t really care about the game, but I can assure you there is something. I’m guessing a scythe, no that’s too easy… a big claw weapon. I bet people are clamoring over this big claw weapon as we speak, “Oh what do you think of the big claw?” they will say, “I got the 360 version, I didn’t get the big claw” their friend will reply, then everyone will laugh at them. Kids can be cruel. So back to the numbers, Dante’s Inferno is selling better on the PS3. That’s right, BETTER. Now I need to point out that I don’t really care which version sells better, I don’t own any stock in either company, but I think Sony is starting to compete with the 360 due to its price drop and exclusive content and that is something gamers need to realize. The PS3 is selling video games now, and some of them are better.

How long will this trend last? Is Sony finally taking some business from Microsoft? What’s up with the stuff? These are all great questions that I can’t answer but I hope I have given you something to think about and for you 360 fanboys, maybe it is time to buy a PS3. Oh, and for you PS3 fanboys, calm down.

A simpler time (a post about things and AVP)

by Jake Sprague on Feb.09, 2010, under Industry news, personal thoughts, rant

I was sort of disappointed when I first played the Aliens vs. Predator demo, and just to clarify I mean the new AVP that is coming out in a few days. I wasn’t feeling the game at first, it felt dated. Then I got to play some more of it with Mike and I am starting to really enjoy it. It does feel sort of dated but in a good way, it reminds me of Quake 2.

If you were lucky enough to get to play Quake 2 in its hay-day you may know what I am talking about. The feeling that every kill doesn’t really matter that much, the feeling that you and your friends are just having fun, the feeling of laughing when you get killed and then saying “I’m coming after you next!” This game feels like that too me. I don’t know if maybe it feels like that because I miss that kind of game experience or if it’s because it is deliberately made like an old school PC FPS but I do know that I like it and I am getting pretty excited for AVP.

AVP has some really cool stuff going on in the demo, being a marine is frightening at times, hearing your radar start to go crazy as multiple aliens come at you from the ceiling is awesome. Being a predator and finding your plasma cannon for the first time is incredible, and yes, just like an old school shooter there are weapons on the ground for marines and predators (even health packs). Then there is the Alien moments where you hide in the shadows or on a wall watching a predator and marine fighting, just waiting for the perfect time to run in and eat the survivor. From what I have played so far this game has a lot going for it and feels pretty balanced for a game with three very different classes. I am counting the days until it gets released.

Okay well i’m not literally counting the days or anything but I am getting excited for it. Look, don’t get all high and mighty like you are really counting the days or something. No one counts days. Lets just leave it at that. Oh so now you really count days?!? Well good for you, count all the fucking days, see if I care!!

PS I’m sorry about saying fuck earlier. I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m just going through a lot right now and I lost my cool. So again I’m sorry. Do you for give me? You do? Well that means a lot coming from you.

Nothing to talk about!

by Mike Steele on Oct.28, 2009, under personal thoughts, rant

It’s odd, throughout the year when there was a decent game release maybe once a month tops, there is always a ton of news and this and that, you know, things to talk about. When holiday season rolls around though, everything that has been talked about is finally coming out, so I find that there is quite a bit of an absence of video game related things to muse about.

Luckily though as the holiday releases come and go, more and more things will be leaked or announced or teased and such, so I’ll have a shit load more things to talk about around that time, so look forward to me attempting a larger vocabulary than I use in real life, to describe my complex opinions on hotly debated digital goings on!

Until then….. Go play Uncharted 2 and Borderlands. And if you don’t wanna play either of those, feel free to buy another game, and send it to me for my birthday so that I can play it since youre such a lazy jerk!

The Island of Misfit 2009 Holiday Video Game Season Line-up’s

by Mike Steele on Oct.07, 2009, under Industry news, personal thoughts, rant

What the hell is going on with this years Holiday Season?!

Around August or September, alot of the bigger Holiday releases started getting pushed to the Febuary-March are of next year, and now here we are in October and there doesn’t seem to be a shit load of releases anymore. Hell, at this point, Microsoft doesn’t even have an exclusive this Christmas, and Sony only really has Uncharted 2 (I would imagine alot of this years better games that were on the Ps3 will get a resurgence because of the price drop though) and Nintendo really only has the New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii, and I guess Wii fit plus (which came out today) may technically count.

Now obviously, those are just the Exclusives, so not all is lost. People still have awesome shit like Borderlands too look forward to, and then anticipated titles like Brutal Legend, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Assassins Creed 2 and Dragon Age: Origins.

But you can’t help but notice that this years Christmas line-up seems a little on the dry side. I guess we’ll have to see how things go and see if any surprises pop up.

So Capcom, are you EVER gonna answer our question?

by Mike Steele on Aug.17, 2009, under Industry news, PS3, X360, personal thoughts, rant

Ever since Capcom first showed the original gameplay video for Lost Planet two and its full 4-player co-op campaign, people have been asking them if its going to be multiplatform. Why have they been asking this? Well, because 2 years ago Capcom announced to the world that they would no longer be releasing any platform specific titles and preceded to release Lost Planet on the ps3 and Devil May Cry 4 on the 360, all of which seemed to back up their earlier claim, but then they released the first video for Lost Planet 2 exclusively through xboxlive, had only the Microsoft and xbox live related logo’s on all press material, and had a noticeable lapse of information regarding any details about its ps3 release.

So, all of this was about 4 video game trade shows ago, and Capcom has STILL avoided revealing any more information about the multiplatform release future of this game, even managing to avoid showing up at E3, allowing them to claim ignorance about how much they really knew about the video game, and NOW the 360 is getting the co-op demo soon and we are continuing the Xbox-centric information trend.

Bravo Capcom, Bravo! (If this was real life, I would have said that slowly and with a hint of braggart, while I slowly turned in my large velvet chair to face Capcom, slowly stroking my white, long-haired cat). I see one of three things happening at this point:

  • 1) The game is a timed exclusive  and comes out for the 360 like 4 or 5 months ahead of the ps3 release. So they get it enough ahead of time to make a deal, but much shorter a turn around time than your normal timed exclusive so that Capcom can claim that they haven’t broken their original promise.
  • 2) Capcom continues to not answer anyone’s question until about a week before the game comes out, if even that, and we find out that Capcom had some type of advertising deal made with Microsoft so that all Lost Planet 2 press was made using the 360 as it’s outspoken platform. Both platforms receive the game and all the unanswered questions suddenly make sense.
  • 3)Capcom straight goes back on what they said, and we don’t see ANY type of Lost Planet release on the ps3 until a good year or more from now and they claim that since the game eventually came out, that it was never considered an “Exclusive” and there is a bit of controversy which eventually blows over like most Capcom stuff. Or we see no release at all.

So that is about all I have to say. I’m prolly more irritated about the situation because I have had a bit of a falling out with the way Capcom has treated it’s audience as of late, but I still feel like the lack of any type of clarification, hell, not even a denial to clarify, is an obvious insult to the people asking the questions. I don’t like when game companies act oblivious to the obvious, and ignore the questions everyone’s asking.

It wouldn’t hurt to pull a Nintendo and, although we’ve been largely ignored so far, to finally address concerns, and at least let us know you’re listening, whether we get a real answer or not.

Dear Half-Life 2: Episode 3,

by Mike Steele on Aug.07, 2009, under personal thoughts

Where the FUCK are you?!

Sincerely your little snooky mooky bear,

Mike steele

But really, in all honesty, I feel like a broken record having to continually ask this question over and over. It’s been almost 2 years and all we’ve seen is that concept art right there…THATS IT, in two effin years. Hell, they openly said after E3 that there was a reason why they didn’t show it but that they didn’t have any plans on talking about it just yet. I know how Valve works, and I find it hard to believe they don’t have a tiny little bone they can throw the die hard fans out there. It prolly comes down to the fact that Left 4 Dead blew up, and so a shit load of dev time got siphoned out of episode three and injected into left 4 dead 1 and 2 updates.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited for Left 4 Dead 2 because I freakin love left for dead, but at this point, I’m almost feeling like I wish left 4 dead 2 would come out just because, then, I know they’d finally start talking about what the hell is up with episode three and maybe slap some of those Left 4 Dead devs with a little bit of Half Life 2 homework, to move that puppy along.

So I’m mostly sorry for using this site to vent my silly fanboyish obsessions, but it’s hard when you’re in love with sweet lady half-life and you’re just not quite sure if she feels the same way about you…you know?

The Jake and Mike VGS podcast episode 8: That really offensive one!!! (here come the subscribers)

by Mike Steele on Jul.10, 2009, under Industry news, personal thoughts, podcast

websitepodcast3I cant believe the things we say is this podcast. They are awful. Horrible. Offensive. Racist. Oppressive. Antisemitic.

Am I kidding?! You’ll never know until you listen, but I will give you a bit of a hint, the things we talk about have SOMETHING to do with video games along the lines of BlazBlue, Fight Night Round 4, Ghost Busters, StarCraft, and countless other Atlas titles.

Pretty good hint right? Well, now you kind of HAVE to listen right? After all of this hype built up, how on earth could you not?!

Oh and if you like two Twenty-somethings talking about their vacations, then this will the podcast you’ve been waiting for since the very beginning!!!

This is done WAY too well not to share.

by Mike Steele on May.17, 2009, under Wha??

Anyone can remake a video or intro using two great properties these days with the powers of machinima, but when you watch this I want you to REALLY pay attention. They recreated the smash bros intro with just precise love and accuracy, you can’t help but be impressed. Afterwards go watch a vid of the original intro, I think you’ll be entertained as well.
